Ever wanted to connect your arduino wireless to your WIFI? Looked at those horribly expensive Zigbee's and thought, way too expensive? Then the ESP8266 is there for you. This cheap Wifi module is perfect for connecting your electronics to your network in an easy way, there's an arduino library available.

The benefit of the ESP-12E that is sold here is that you can install the arduino software on the module itself, you don't need a separate arduino board. You get 9 output pins, less than a full Arduino board but enough to connect a device to your network and interact with it (for instance a motor, a pwm dimmer for your leds, a relais).

Downside: the holes aren't standard size and spacing, so you cannot solder a standard header to it. Best is to solder the wires directly to the board.

PROS
Small. Low wattage. Very powerful for size. Easy to program with the libraries available online.
CONS
Pin spacing is not standard breadboard spacing. The required 3.3v requires additional circuitry.
This easy to integrate into a Home Assistant smart home system. On one module I connected:
1. A DHT11 temperature humidity sensor.
2. Speaker to play rtttl 8-bit tunes (as an alert for doorbell, mail etc).
3. A bright LED (to alert people when the environment is too noisy to hear the tune).

I programmed the module with esphome. The first time with a FTDI module and cables. After that, updates are done over wifi. I still have pins free to add other sensors etc.
