Received on 3/10/2016, it's an authentic.

Not trying to be argumentative and I'm not invested in it being one thing or not. I opened it up for a look see and it does look like an aluminium extrusion, but it's magnetic, so it must be plated or something. The weight of it doesn't convince me that it's a zinc alloy.

This has become more of a mystery for me...

^Is there a battery in there per chance?

If so, try without one, if not, interesting ;-)
Woah, mama!

Nope.

ETA

Even the battery cap is mildly magnetic on it's own.

Magnetic test for SS in not reliable. Some SS is magnetic, some not.

It's still mystery meat metal

Not trying to be argumentative and I'm not invested in it being one thing or not.

If it's been worked, most likely magnetic (not magnetized). I don't think they'd use a non magnetic form of ss for any particular reason.

It's probably not zinc alloy though. :P

I think it's most likely an aluminium alloy with some plating that is magnetic. The magnets over the body, without any battery since that would obviously influence the magnets, wasn't weak, but it wasn't a strong as on the stainless steel screws.

ETA

The inner extrusion doesn't have a clear coat and the finish is the same.

If anyone cares I have a black/silver one, I finally stripped the battery cap, and before that it wouldn't charge batteries, and when new it never would link to my computer for an upgrade. However after 8 months not a scratch on it, I'm actually impressed about that part.

Both mine are holding up well. I have the all black and SS one. I've used the black one more, it's been dropped a few times, I bought it a month or two earlier. They are in rotation though, I tend to use one thing until I get bored with it.

The paint is still good on the black one, one chip on the battery cover. One dent on the bottom that didn't remove any paint.

I've lubed the threads of the cap. I don't tighten it hard, there's no point. They still look brand new.

If you polish it SS looks better with age. I have the kangertech kbox everyone says isn't SS but it looks even better now from polishing fingerprints then the day I got it. More polished then brushed now.
