It really depends on your needs and expectations, it will work but the quality of the picture will be bad. If you want better quality and are willing to spend the money I would recommend a second hand decent projector. However do remember that the initial cost of a second hand projector will probably be followed by the additional cost of a replacment bulb in the near future.

Aye, that's what I concluded from other sources :( Might just have to buy a TV after all... Thanks!

Don't dismiss a projector, they can be found for a decent price second hand and the cost of bulb replacement is minimal if you order the bare bulb from china directly then replace it your self (Perhaps fasttech could start stocking these bulbs).
I personally run a projector in my computer/theater room and it is one of the best things I have done. My projector system cost me $190 AU with a new bulb and gives great picture at a decent resolution. I often hook up the pc to it and have a few sets of 3d DLP glasses. Playing games and watching movies in 3d on a 3 meter screen is great and you will probably never go to the cinema again.
As long as you have a flat whitish wall and a room that you can darken it is a great tv replacement that is very portable and small in size.
Just not this projector...
