Keeping the battery in the charger, but in opposite direction.
Would it be safe for battery / charger to keep all the time the battery in the charger but in the opposite direction?
This would be for the sake of compactness.

If you really, really want to keep the battery in the charger (and you don't), slip a piece of insulating material between each end of the battery and the charger connection, put the whole thing in a snug-fitting ziplock bag, and put an elastic band around the middle to stop the battery coming free.

Or just buy a sub-$1 battery case of some description and put up with the dramatic reduction of space in your baggage ;)

It might be possible, but no way to know without a schematic diagram and possibly data sheets for some of the components might be needed.

If the charger claims protection for wrong polarity, it will probably work. You could try it, but take safety measures in case something goes wrong.

Of course, as others pointed out, you aren't saving much space, so one of the silicone battery cases would be the best approach.
